This is the 2nd year VPEF and Vitus have partnered together for this event. Vitus is excited to have its event at the Buck Mansion again and to share the historic location with fellow wine lovers. The Hearn & Gilpin families have been a supporter of VPEF for many years and hope that this year’s event raises even more money. “This is a great way to support education in our community and to enjoy fine wine in a lovely setting with friends and neighbors,” added Catherine Podkin, VPEF President.

Vitus plans to pour their 2008 Reserve Merlot, 2008 Napa Valley Merlot, 2008 Special Select Cabernet, 2008 Oakville Cabernet and newly released Chardonnay at the event, which will also include a selection of appetizers. Entertainment will be provided by a local guitarist, as well as student musicians from Vacaville Unified School District.

5K Run/Walk – 8:30am Loop around the lagoon. USATF certification CA09001RS

10K Run/Walk – 8:45am Double loop course around the lagoon.

Tower Challenge (approx 6.3 miles) – 8:45am Trail route with a 730′ gain/descent plus loop around the lagoon. Suggested for ages 13+.

2 Mile Walk– 9:00am. Untimed, loop course along the shoreline of the lagoon.

1/2 Mile Kid’s Fun Run (Ages 9-12) – 10:30am

1/2 Mile Kid’s Fun Run (Ages 8 & Under) – 10:45am

Arriving early for parking is strongly recommended for all events. Gate and course will be closed at approximately 8:00 am for race commencement. Participants should carpool if possible.

Parking: Main parking entrance is located at the south gate into park from Lagoon Valley Road exit. Follow the event parking signs. Limited alternate parking available at the Pena Adobe Road exit from I-80.

Directions: From San Francisco area, take I-80 eastbound and exit Lagoon Valley Road. Turn right and follow signs for parking. From Sacramento area, take I-80 westbound to Lagoon Valley Road exit. Turn left and follow the event parking signs to south gate entrance.

Trail Run Series Event:

The Tower Challenge 10K is the 1st of 2 races in the 2011 Fleet Feet Trail Run Series. Earn points and be eligible for prizes for participation in the this event, The 2nd event is the Lynch Canyon Trail Run near Vallejo on June 4, 2011. Packet Pick Up:

Entrants may register and pick up race packets (bibs/t-shirts) at Fleet Feet Sports,354 Merchant Street in Vacaville on Friday, April 29th, from 12-6:00PM. Race packets may also be picked up on race morning at the race site starting at 7:00AM

Entry Fees:

Adults: $30.00 by April 11th; $35.00 April 12-April 30.

*Adult Team Runner: $25 by April 11th; $30 April 12-29.

Youth (18 & Under): $15.00 by April 11th; $20.00 April 19-April 30.

* must have 3 members per team and have a unique team name

Awards:

$600 prize purse for top male & female 5K, 10K and Tower Challenge winners. Overall and top 3 age-group male and female prizes will also be given to 5K, 10K and Tower challenge winners.

5K Team Challenge:

Create a team of 3 or more participants and include your team name on your entry. Team members should sign up individually. The team with the most entries wins a $500 Classroom Enrichment Grant, donated to a Vacaville classroom in the team’s name. Team members may enter any distance to determine overall team participation. The top 3 fastest 5K finishers on each time will determine the team’s 5K time. Entrants on teams are still eligible for age division awards in the 5K/10K/Tower Challenge.

Optional Pledge Program:

Collect pledges or donations to sponsor your participation in Loop the Lagoon! All pledge money raised is to be brought race day and turned in at the pledge table.

Volunteers Needed:

Not planning on running? Please join our crew on event morning as a volunteer. We and thousands of runners, walkers and kids would love to have your support. Loop the Lagoon includes a 5k (3.1 miles), a 10k, a two-mile walk, a Kids’ Run and the infamous Tower Challenge, which is a road-and-trail course that boasts a 730-foot elevation gain.
This year, in a creative effort to mitigate the looming VUSD budget crisis, event organizers have added a new twist. A 5k Team Challenge invites local businesses, service groups, families and friends to make a difference for local education by entering the event as teams.  “Many businesses see real value in safeguarding the quality of education. They want to help offset the budget deficit, but are struggling to give cash in this economy. The 5k Team Challenge give groups a way to pitch in, raise money for schools and have a great time doing it. It has been fun to see groups get so excited about participating this year,” reports VPEF President Catherine Podkin.

The largest group to participate in this year’s Loop wins a $500 Classroom Enrichment Grant. The grant, to be determined by VPEF, will be donated to a Vacaville classroom in the team’s name. Each team must have a minimum of three participants, and run in the 5k race. Groups will be timed and scored to determine the team’s overall place. Members may enter other events, however only the 5k event will be recorded for team placement.

Entry fees for the 5k Team Challenge are $30 per adult team member, and $15 per child age 18  and under. Entry forms are also available online at www.vpef.org or at Fleet Feet, 354 Merchant Street, Vacaville. Forms for each team member must be postmarked by April 26, 2010, or submitted in person to Fleet Feet by April 30, 2010.  Register early at www.vpef.org by April 18 and save $5. No team registration on race day is available.

Individuals may also choose to enter any one of the Loop events. Individual race fees range from $15 to $30, depending on age and date of registration. Participants receive a t-shirt (while supplies last) and a race bib. Entry forms for individuals can also be downloaded from www.vpef.org.

Registration  begins at 7 a.m. on the morning of the race. In addition to the races, there will be entertainment, food and a kid’s expo.

Lagoon Valley Park is located off the Pena Adobe exit from I-80, and participants are encouraged to arrive early for parking.

1. Educational Enrichment. Projects that help make the current curriculum come alive for students such as a field trips, assembly, community service, or special class project.
2. Exploration Opportunities. Projects that expose the students to potentially new interests (music, photography, gardening, construction, etc.) or to career fields that might spark an interest in further learning.

These VPEF grants allowed students to enjoy such diverse trip destinations as the Lawrence Hall of Science, the Exploratorium, Sacramento Zoo, Outdoor Environmental Camp, Loma Vista Farm, Sutter’s Fort, Davis Arboretum, Loma Mar Science Camp, a trip on the USS Potomac, the Monavi Center, and others.

VPEF’s board heard many comments from parents, teachers and students, and not only are these comments especially rewarding, but they illustrated the value these grants have in the enrichment of the educational experience. They only encourage the VPEF to redouble fund-raising efforts so mini-grants can continue to be awarded in the future.

Some of the comments participants sent included this from a teacher whose students visited the Sacramento Zoo: “The grant gave us the opportunity to use our PTC funds to pay for our admission costs (instead of requiring students to bring money)…it is a wonderful gift to be able to provide some enrichment in the lives of our students.” Another commented that “our class would like to thank you very much for allowing us to take the field trip to Loma Vista Farm. It was a real treat for many of my students.

“Students were given a ‘hands on’ experience of a working farm,” said another teacher. “They were able to touch the animals, plant seeds and learn about being kind to one another and animals. Many children had never been up close to a live farm animal. Field trips have almost become prohibitive with the cost of bus transportation. You made 123 children very happy. We were all enriched by the experience.”

Another parent wrote: “We wish to make known our appreciation for the funds provided that allowed the field trip to the Sacramento Zoo. It was both educational and stimulating for the children.”

Even the students weighed in with numerous colorful drawings and comments such as: “I like the horse the best,” “I liked the chickens at the farm,” and many others.

This note of thanks would not be enough without VPEF’s extending it to the many individuals and businesses who made these grants possible through their generous donations and participation in VPEF events. The Board looks forward to continuing its work with the District and schools to help fund similar experiences in the future.
