The Vacaville Public Education Foundation presented a check for $6,899 to the district at its Dec. 9 Board meeting to support music programs in the school district. “We appreciate the efforts of the music department to keep the arts and music alive in our schools to enrich our students and entire community,” stated VPEF president Catherine Podkin in a letter presented to the board.
The money came largely from donations made in the last six months by individuals in the community according to Podkin. Donations ranged from $25 to $2,500. Many were in response to a Reporter editorial written by VUSD teacher David Barthelmess. Still others were collected at a combined retirement party for Tom and Debbie Garcie who requested contributions be made to the music program in lieu of gifts.
Combined with other donations from VPEF and from the Vacaville Music Boosters clubs, the money is being used to fund an extra music teacher in the district.
